Shevchuk asked the pontiff to be a "voice that will defend Ukraine."

During a meeting with the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Pope Francis promised that he is "doing everything to ensure that the war in Ukraine comes to an end." Shevchuk shared this in a video published on the Vatican News website.

The head of the UGCC said he asked the pontiff to "be a voice that will defend Ukraine" and also to "speak out clearly against Russian attacks on civilians and attempts to destroy the infrastructure of our cities and villages, aiming to freeze Ukrainians this winter."

According to Shevchuk, it was a "unique opportunity to have a personal audience with the Holy Father, Pope Francis."

"The Pope promised that he is doing everything possible to ensure that the war in Ukraine ends. He assured me that he is on our side, that he stands with Ukraine, and, of course, he pledged to pray for Ukraine and to do everything so that God may bless our people," said Sviatoslav Shevchuk.

As reported earlier, a meeting between the head of the Roman Catholic Church and President Zelensky is scheduled for tomorrow, October 11.

Previously, Shevchuk stated that the Pope's words regarding the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) should not be paid attention to. He believes that it is not so much the "personality of the Pope" that matters, but the "institution of the Vatican as a subject of international law."
