The Ministry of Culture adds the tradition of bell ringing in Lviv to the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine.

The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy has added the tradition of bell ringing in Lviv to the National List of Elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine, according to the agency's announcement.

Among the melodies included in the list of intangible heritage are:

  • "Blagovest" (Gospel – Ed.) — performed daily before church services;
  • "Perezvon" (Chiming – Trans.) — performed on Easter during the blessing of Easter cakes, on Palm Sunday, as well as during various processions, weddings, and baptisms;
  • Funeral melody;
  • Alarm melody, signaling a natural disaster or enemy attack.

"The uniqueness of the bell-ringing tradition in Lviv lies in its social and interfaith harmony, as bell-ringers adhere to the principle of equality and perform their duties across different denominations, fostering a tolerant environment," the Ministry of Culture stated.

As the UOJ previously reported, the authorities in Lviv had earlier taken away the cathedral from the UOC. During the Liturgy, parishioners were pushed out of the church so that a "commission" could work inside.
