ROC decides to create the centre of Diocese of South Africa in Johannesburg
The temple complex of the ROC parish in the largest city of South Africa will become the spiritual centre of the new diocese within the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa.
In Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa by population, the administrative and spiritual centre of the South African Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church will be created as part of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa, Patriarchal Exarch of Africa, Metropolitan Leonid of Klin, said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
The temple complex of the parish of St. Sergius, the hegumen of Radonezh and All Russia, the wonderworker of the Russian Orthodox Church, which has been operating in this city since 1999, will become the base for the diocesan centre.
“The temple complex includes, in addition to the temple, several additional premises for parish needs. This is a full-fledged material base for creating a diocesan centre with a cathedral there,” said Metropolitan Leonid.
As reported, on December 29, 2021, the ROC formed the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa and decided to receive 102 clerics of the Alexandrian Patriarchate from eight African countries into the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church, in accordance with earlier petitions.
