The Russian Supreme Court has ruled to "recognise the international public movement LGBT as an extremist organisation".

On 30 November 2023, the Russian Supreme Court banned LGBT in the country, reports Interfax. The court upheld the Russian Justice Ministry's claim to recognise the international LGBT movement as extremist.

"To recognise the international LGBT public movement as an extremist organisation and to ban its activities on the territory of Russia," Judge Oleg Nefedov announced the decision.

According to Interfax, the decision does not affect citizens' right to privacy and will not entail any negative legal consequences. The ban will only concern the propaganda of LGBT, the promotion of this movement and the involvement of new members.

As earlier reported, the Verkhovna Rada registered a bill on same-sex partnerships.
