Report: UOC monks not evicted from Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra at UN’s request
The UN stated that the Ukrainian authorities heeded their request and did not forcefully evict the monks of the UOC from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
The Ukrainian authorities refrained from forcibly evicting the monks of the UOC from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in March 2023 at the request of the UN, reports the press service of the UN Office for Human Rights.
The UN noted that the eviction of the UOC monks from the Lavra could have led to "violence".
"The Ministry of Culture prematurely terminated the lease agreement with the UOC on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, which is state-owned. The authorities took into account the advocacy efforts of the UN and refrained from actions that could lead to violence, and did not forcibly evict the UOC from the Lavra by the set deadline of March 29," the organization said.
As reported, the abbot of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Metropolitan Pavel, stated that the eviction of the monks from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra could end very badly and would lead to public outrage.
