Kyiv Regional Council “bans” UOC
The deputies recommended that local authorities tell residents about the “subordination” of the UOC to Moscow.
On June 9, 2023, the Kyiv Regional Council adopted a decision “On Ensuring the Strengthening of National Security in the Sphere of Freedom of Conscience and the Activities of Religious Organizations on the Territory of the Kyiv Region,” Eurosolidarity deputy Roman Tytykalo posted on Facebook.
The 5-point paper proposes:
- to support the appeal of the deputies of the Kyiv Regional Council to ban the UOC;
- to recommend that the Kyiv RMA study the compliance of the UOC with the requirements of art. 12 of the Law “On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations” and in case of non-compliance with it, file lawsuits to terminate the activities of the UOC communities;
- to recommend that local authorities raise awareness among the public at large on the conclusions of the DESS experts regarding the status of the UOC;
- to address the issue of legitimacy of the use of communal property by the communities of the UOC.
In his turn, Tytykalo wrote on Facebook that the UOC allegedly “is controlled by the aggressor country and supports its crimes.” Therefore, "the Kyiv Regional Council asks the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to immediately consider the bills to ban the activities of the UOC-MP."
Earlier, the UOJ wrote that according to Yelensky, local authorities cannot ban the UOC, this is illegal.
