Zelenskyy responds to the petition to cancel the Istanbul Convention
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has considered an electronic petition with a request to denounce the Law on Ratification of the Istanbul Convention, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, initiated by Yulia Tymoshenko. Zelenskyy's response was published on the website of the official website of the President of Ukraine.
“The Istanbul Convention was ratified with statements that stipulate, in particular, that Ukraine does not consider any of its provisions as binding to change the Constitution of Ukraine and the Family Code of Ukraine. <...> When acceding to the Convention, Ukraine also determined that it would apply the Convention in accordance with the values, principles and norms defined by the Constitution of Ukraine. Given the increased public interest in this issue, the spread of myths and biased interpretations of the Istanbul Convention, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine was invited to continue the implementation of the tasks of the state family policy and strengthen the information campaign in order to clarify the goals and certain provisions of the Convention,” the President’s comment says.
Recall that after the ratification of the Istanbul Convention, a petition for its denunciation was posted on the website of the President. The petition was signed by more than 25 thousand people.
