Metropolitan Hilarion, Primate of ROCOR, reposes in the Lord

On May 16, 2022, His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of ROCOR, reposed in the Lord after a long illness. This is reported by the official website of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.

“The head of ROCOR died in one of the hospitals in New York. Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan, vicar of the Eastern American Diocese, performed "The Canon on the Departure of the Soul from the Body" at the bedside of the deceased First Hierarch. His Eminence was concelebrated by Archpriest Seraphim Gan and Hierodeacon Panteleimon (Zhigalin)," the message says.

Metropolitan Hilarion (secular name Igor Kapral – Ed.) was born in 1948 in Canada. In 1967 he entered the Holy Trinity Theological Seminary in Jordanville (USA). On December 10, 1984, Hieromonk Hilarion was ordained Bishop of Manhattan. The ROCOR Council of Bishops approved Vladyka as deputy secretary of the ROCOR Synod of Bishops.

On June 20, 1996, Metropolitan Hilarion was appointed to the See of Sydney and Australia and New Zealand with the elevation to the rank of archbishop. After the death of ROCOR First Hierarch Metropolitan Laurus in March 2008, he served as Acting Chairman of the ROCOR Synod of Bishops. On May 13, 2008, at the ROCOR Council of Bishops, he was elected chairperson of the ROCOR Synod of Bishops.

Earlier, the UOJ reported that Metropolitan Hilarion (Kapral) condemned the schism in Ukraine and the actions of Phanar regarding the “legalization” of the OCU.
