The Miriane Public Union called on Orthodox Ukrainians to unite and consolidate their efforts against Ukraine's ratification of the Istanbul Convention. The corresponding statement was published on the organization's tg channel on Wednesday, December 1, 2021.
The statement followed in the aftermath of a statement published on the official website of President of Ukraine that Vladimir Zelensky is in favor of Ukraine's accession to the Istanbul Convention, preparing a bill, his position on this issue being principled and unchanged.
"The laity continues to be consistent and firm in its standpoint: the Istanbul Convention does not protect against domestic violence, but it threatens traditional family values and the institution of the family as a whole.
Due to the fact that the family is traditionally the core of Ukrainian society, family values should be the object of enhanced protection of the state. Therefore, the laity calls on all Orthodox to unite and consolidate their efforts against the ratification of the Istanbul Convention," the NGO said in a statement.
We will remind, in Kryvyi Rih laymen started collecting signatures against the Istanbul convention.
Oleg Denisov, a well-known human rights activist, spoke earlier about why countries withdraw from the Istanbul Convention and what the consequences are for Ukraine in the event of its ratification.
