Mount Athos has been experiencing numerous seismic tremors over the past two weeks. According to the website ekathimerini, on Thursday evening, August 8, two earthquakes struck the monastic community of Athos in northeastern Greece.

The first earthquake had a magnitude of 3.5, followed by a second one just seconds later with a magnitude of 3.7.

The Seismological Station of the University of Thessaloniki reported that the epicenter was located between Karyes and Ouranoupolis, in the same focal zone that has been the source of seismic activity for the past ten days. The depth of both earthquakes was estimated to be 10 kilometers.

Sources from the UOJ on the Holy Mountain have reported that there had been daily tremors for nearly two weeks. The monks of Athos note that this is the first time they have witnessed such a phenomenon.

As reported by the UOJ, the Greek authorities plan to clear out the St. Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos.
