The primate of the UGCC, Sviatoslav Shevchuk, said that his church structure is a religious minority in our country, and therefore the state must ensure the rights of Greek Catholics. He said this when he commented on the upcoming meeting between President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky and Pope Francis on air of the Open Church program.
“We also expect that during this conversation we will also talk actually about the life of the Catholic Church in Ukraine,” he stressed. “Because being Catholics of the Byzantine rite, as well as Catholics of the Latin rite, the UGCC is a religious minority in Ukraine. And it’s obvious that in a democracy, minority rights must be ensured.”
Shevchuk also assured that our state "seriously needs" to develop a strategy for relations with the "Apostolic capital" – the Vatican.
Earlier, the UGCC leader Sviatoslav Shevchuk said that he personally suggested that the head of State visit the pontiff in the Vatican.
