His Beatitude Onuphry pays homage to liquidators of Chernobyl catastrophe

On December 14, 2019, His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine, Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, attended the ceremony of laying flowers at the memorial “To the Chernobyl Warriors” and the burial mound “To the Heroes of Chernobyl,” the UOC Information and Education Department reports.

The Archpastor was accompanied by the UOC Chancellor, Metropolitan Anthony (Pakanich) of Boryspil and Brovary, and Bishop Victor (Kotsaba), vicar of the Kiev Metropolis.

The Primate and hierarchs of the UOC laid flowers at the memorial sign “To the Chernobyl Warriors” and the memorial barrow “To the Heroes of Chernobyl” and prayed for the repose of the participants in the liquidation of the Chernobyl catastrophe.

Those present paid homage to the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe with a minute of silence.

The day of honoring the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster was established in Ukraine by Presidential Decree of November 10, 2006, in memory of the completion of the construction of the sarcophagus over the destroyed fourth power unit of Chernobyl power plant.

As reported by the UOJ, earlier the Primate of the UOC, His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry, performed the episcopal ordination and consecrated a new church in Kiev.
